🎭Geoffrey Holder: A Renaissance Man of Art

Geoffrey Holder

YouTube: visionaryproject

.

Geoffrey Holder was far more than just a multi-talented artist; he was a fashion visionary. A celebrated dancer, choreographer, actor, painter, and director, Holder's creative spirit permeated every aspect of his life, including his bold and distinctive style.

A Caribbean Heritage, A Global Impact

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Holder's flair for fashion reflected his vibrant Caribbean heritage. He embraced bold colors, striking patterns, and a mix of textures rarely seen in  menswear at the time.  But Holder's style was about more than just where he came from – it was a reflection of his global travels and insatiable curiosity. He blended elements from African cultures, European tailoring, and avant-garde fashion trends to create a style entirely his own.

From the Stage to the Runway

Holder's impact on fashion extended beyond his own wardrobe. As a dancer and choreographer, he often crafted extravagant costumes that were integral to the storytelling and visual drama of his performances.  His work in Broadway productions like "House of Flowers" and "The Wiz," for which he won two Tony Awards, showcased his unique ability to translate movement and emotion into wearable art.

Embracing Individuality

Geoffrey Holder's fashion was characterized by an unwavering sense of individuality.  He frequently wore flowing caftans, embellished suits, and statement headpieces with an air of confidence and authenticity that was impossible to ignore. His style was theatrical, yes, but it was also a testament to his belief in the power of self-expression. Holder once said, "Elegance is an attitude." He embodied this mantra with every outfit he put together, reminding us all that looking good is about feeling good about yourself.

A Continuing Influence

Geoffrey Holder's sartorial legacy continues to inspire designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. His fusion of cultural influences and flamboyant personality paved the way for those who believe that fashion is about more than trends.  It's about embracing your individuality and using clothing as a canvas for self-expression.

⭐Ann Lowe: A Pioneering African American Fashion Designer

Photo:  Smithsonian | NMAAHC

Ann Lowe was an African American fashion designer who rose to prominence in the mid-20th century. She was best known for designing Jacqueline Bouvier's wedding dress, but her career spanned decades and included work for other notable clients, such as socialites, actresses, and members of royalty.

YouTube: NMAAHC

Early Life and Career

Lowe was born in 1898 in Montgomery, Alabama, into a family of sharecroppers. Her mother was a seamstress, and Lowe learned the craft from her at a young age. Despite facing racial discrimination and limited opportunities, Lowe's talent and passion for design shone through. She began her career working in local Montgomery shops, eventually opening her own business in 1928.

Rise to Fame

Lowe's reputation for exquisite craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread beyond Montgomery. By the 1940s, she had established herself as a leading designer in New York City, catering to a clientele that included some of the wealthiest and most influential women in America. Her designs were featured in prominent fashion magazines and worn by celebrities like Marian Anderson, Lena Horne, and Barbara Bates.

Designing for Jackie Kennedy

In 1953, Lowe received the commission of a lifetime: to design Jacqueline Bouvier's wedding dress for her marriage to Senator John F. Kennedy. The dress, a breathtaking creation of ivory silk taffeta with a bouffant skirt and a fitted bodice, became an instant sensation. It was featured on the cover of Life magazine and solidified Lowe's place as a fashion icon.

Challenges and Legacy

Despite her success, Lowe's career was not without challenges. As an African American woman in the fashion industry, she faced persistent discrimination. She was often denied access to resources and opportunities available to her white counterparts. Additionally, she was frequently underpaid for her work and struggled to receive proper credit for her designs.

Despite these obstacles, Lowe persevered and built a remarkable career. Her talent, resilience, and determination paved the way for future generations of African American designers. Today, she is recognized as a pioneer in the fashion industry and an inspiration to aspiring designers of all backgrounds.

Lowe's Legacy

Ann Lowe's legacy extends far beyond the wedding dress that made her famous. Her work represents not only exquisite craftsmanship but also the triumph of human spirit over adversity. She challenged racial barriers in the fashion world and inspired generations of designers to come. Her story continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity, inclusion, and perseverance in the pursuit of one's dreams.

🤓Flashback Friday: ⭐Style Icon: Helen Williams {a TFC repost}

belren.com

Helen Williams was born in East Riverton, New Jersey in 1937. She is best known for being the first black mainstream (commercial) fashion model. Helen made her mark in America and Paris in the 1950’s and 60’s.

There were others that came before her, but there was a little more to this lady. At the age of 17, she caught the attention of Lena Horne and Sammy Davis Jr, who encourage her modeling career.  Following the encouragement, Helen worked with Ophelia DeVore.  This was an awesome match because Ophelia had opened, Grace Demarco Modeling Agency, {first black modeling agency}. After etiquette learning and preparing for the world stage, Helen Williams took the world by storm. She broke racial barriers for dark skin woman {whom were considered ugly in America}.

Helen represented change, with grace and authority. Her beauty was spread across the world through ads and brands including Jet magazine, Ebony magazine, Sears, Christian Dior and Jean Desses. Helen William was the ‘IT’ girl of her time.

🤓Fashion Dreams: Coco Chanel {Learn from the Greats!} ~ a TFC repost

Well, well well how are ya'll doing? Feels like its been a nice break from business and its politics.  Graduate school is no joke, so it was a must to refocus on projects and assignments so I can possibly graduate lol.  Last note I left you was about some major test I had to take and....I COMPLETED MY MIDTERMS {not with flying colors, but good 😅}.  Starting a new career is no joke and a lot of pressure, but I been a diamond.💎

📚My current classes are: Dynamics of Fashion and Online Retailing and Ecommerce.

💃Dynamics of Fashion is explains the ins and outs of the fashion industry from production, retail, brand image and public relations. I have to do a lot of analysis reports on various aspects of fashion. Now we are working on the final project - choose a fashion brand and analyze the type of business model the brand's foundation is built, basically acting as a consultant to reinforce brand image.

💃Online Retailing and eCommerce is teaching me how to operate an eCommerce business.  I'm currently developing a Peak-Season eCommerce Plan, in which I have to create a brand in a specific product category and create a detailed strategy to know when and how to market during popular times as well as selling product that is in demand.  My company is called Scentful Chic, smell the style  - women's fragrance category; developing a website and everything.  I would love to share the final project!

📑Midpoint Review was a huge meeting with the fashion directors and I have another one before I graduate...aye yi yi😅.  For my thesis project I created a blogzine called IT! Chick Blogzine- where IT! speaks for itself, also presenting a website for this idea.  I will be able to put this idea into action next semester, in a magazine class.  Then I will share this project tooo!

The lady above is Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, a french designer and trailblazer of fashion.  We know you learn from the best to be the best. As soon as I studied Chanel, my fashion life was decided for obvious reasons.  There aren't too many black women trailblazers in fashion/beauty, hence why I created That Fashion Chick...my splash will be made for sure!  I see fashion in a way that puts me in my own lane and I'm steady driving. 😎

....................

Glad to be back and more post will come.
No more breaks until next year, lol sike! 😏

📢Have an AWWWESOME DAAAAAY Chicadees!
💖💛💜💚

I love looking back at my work😍. The journey is real and I continue to amaze myself and inspire readers. Every young person should have examples of greatness, though family first!
